Orthotics Q & A

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are prescription devices that replace your ordinary shoe insoles to help with many foot and ankle problems. Some of the reasons you might need orthotics include:

  • Heel pain
  • Hip pain
  • Back pain
  • Knee pain
  • Bunions
  • Balance issues

Orthotics can correct foot movement, add support, improve foot positioning, and more to relieve your pain without surgery.

What are the different options in custom orthotics?

Foot Clinic offers a variety of premade and custom orthotics. Both types of orthotics can have benefits and drawbacks. The main advantage of custom orthotics is that a laboratory creates them just for you using molds of your feet.

Although custom orthotics are more expensive, they're made from the highest quality materials, last longer, and can correct a larger number of issues.

Dr. Spitz helps you choose the ideal orthotics for your particular circumstances. The main categories are:

Soft orthotics

Soft orthotics cushion your feet, reduce pressure, reduce impact, and minimize shock. Generally, soft orthotics are appropriate for foot and ankle arthritis, foot ulcers, and some kinds of foot deformity.

Rigid orthotics

Rigid orthotics are hard, generally having no soft padding. They're often made of plastic or carbon fiber. In most cases, rigid orthotics are best at correcting serious structural foot misalignment or gait problems. They're the most powerful kind of orthotic but might require an adjustment period.

Semi-rigid orthotics

Semi-rigid orthotics are typically firmer than soft orthotics but not as hard as rigid ones. They're often made of graphite and may have a layer of padding on top. Semi-rigid orthotics can correct biomechanical foot problems, maximize flexibility, and improve shock absorption.

There's an orthotic for everyone, so Dr. Spitz takes the time to understand your situation before helping you make a choice.

What if I don't want to wear orthotics but need foot correction?

If you'd rather explore a long-term solution so you don't need orthotics at all, HyProCure® could be right for you. HyProCure is a minimally invasive surgery in which Dr. Spitz makes a small incision to position a small stent between your ankle and heel.

Although it's tiny, the stent has big effects. It realigns your hindfoot, relieves joint pressure, and improves the balance of your ankles, hips, knees, and back. Dr. Spitz can discuss this option with you in detail if you'd like to learn more.
